The Ugandan government is set to introduce a new law to promote respect and values for older people.
This move comes from concerns that younger generations, influenced by Western culture, are not valuing the wisdom of their elders.
Dominic Mafwabi Gidudu, the Minister of State for Older Persons, shared this information with Parliament in preparation for the International Day for Older Persons, which will be observed on October 1, 2024.
Gidudu stated, “Younger people are increasingly overlooking the advice and knowledge of older individuals, mainly due to modern influences.
The Ministry of Gender, Labour, and Social Development is collaborating with the Attorney General to strengthen the Older Persons Bill. This will help restore respect for elders, especially in service delivery.”
