City car dealer Khalif Kairo was arrested after appearing in court in Nairobi due to new fraud allegations against his dealership.
He was taken into custody outside the Milimani Law Court after a case mention. Kairo had requested his passport from the Magistrate’s court to travel to the USA for a week to attend a fundraiser.
His lawyer argued that Kairo is not a flight risk and would return after his trip. The prosecution insisted that Kairo must provide details of his travel plans before any decision on his passport is made.
The court scheduled a follow-up on January 31 to check on the necessary documents for passport release.
Kairo faces charges for not honoring car sale agreements and has been granted a cash bail for each of the two cheating charges.
One charge alleges Kairo induced Jeff Munane to pay Ksh2.1 million for a Honda Vezel hybrid that was never delivered.
The other charge is from Dona Okoth, who transferred Ksh2.98 million for a car purchase.
