Jomo Kenyatta University of Agriculture and Technology (JKUAT) Students Held a Candlelight Vigil last night, For 20-year-old  3rd year student Rita Waeni Muendo who was murdered in Roysambu on Sunday, January 14, 2024.

Waeni was a student at the institution and was set to begin her fourth and final year before her untimely demise.

The vigil was held at the Pavillion at 6 pm. Hundreds of students turned up and stood in the dark holding candles as they silently bowed their heads.

The students stuck the lit candles to the ground, organizing them to spell her name. Another video showed them standing on either side of the lit candles while singing.

Rita Waeni's remains were discovered in plastic bags at a rental apartment in Roysambu, on 14 January. Her head was missing, along with her phone and other personal items.

The head was recovered in Kiambaa Dam in Kiambu County on Sunday. The DCI has also taken over the case. they will do a forensic test on the head.

Two Nigerian nationals arrested in connection with Waeni’s murder were on Monday arraigned before after being arrested in a rented flat in Ndenderu, Kiambu County.

Kasarani DCI officers recovered a hatchet and a butcher's knife, six mobile phones, an assortment of SIM cards, three laptop computers and a Kenyan identity card during the duo’s arrest.

Police said investigations revealed that the two had been in Kenya illegally.
