CNN International Correspondent Larry Madowo was on Thursday, September 9 overwhelmed by emotions while paying a tribute to his departed grandmother, Francesca Madowo during her final sendoff in Siaya County.

Speaking in Dholuo, the journalist detailed his relationship with her grandmother, noting that she ws the only one who referred him to Omondi while everyone else called him Larry or Madowo.

Larry also recalled fun moments he had with his grandma, recalling an instance where she confronted him because he did not wave back when she waved at him while on TV.

“She knew that I work on television. She used to watch and wave at me and think I have seen her. She knew all of us and had unique names with which she would refer to each one of us,” said Larry. 

Francesca passed away days after being placed on a ventilator after contracting COVID19.

Mourning her grandmother, Larry describing her as his family’s matriatch and heartbeat, further detailing how his grandmother’s death has affected him.

“My grandmother, the family matriarch, our heartbeat, my comedy partner, the dearly loved Francesca Madowo has joined the ancestors. I am numb. My heart has been ripped from my chest. Light has gone out of my life. Nind gi kwe, min Omollo,” he wrote.
