Murder convict Ruth Kamande, who stabbed her boyfriend 25 times, graduates with a Law Degree alongside inmates and wardens at Kamiti Maximum Prison.

Ruth Kamande is serving a life sentence at Lang’ata Women Prison since 2015 for a tragic altercation with her partner.

During her speech for the graduating class, she reflected on her childhood admiration for a female lawyer featured in a court documentary.

She expressed her long-held dream of becoming a lawyer, noting, “I never imagined I would achieve this goal under such different circumstances.”

Recalling her quest to find a good lawyer who also understood her, Kamande stated that she jumped at the chance to study law when it was offered to her.

“When I heard that Justice Defenders are offering the opportunity to instill dignity through education, I said I would try. I knew there were so many challenges because I was serving on death row but I decided to take the chance so that in future I could help somebody like Professor Githu Muigai helped me.”

Ruth Kamande commited the murder in 2015. In 2016, she contested in the Miss Lang’ata Women’s Prison contest and won.

During her trial, Kamande insisted that she had committed the murder in an act of self-defence following a domestic altercation with her boyfriend at his Buruburu residence.
