The Kenya Copyright Board (KECOBO) has warned individuals and corporates against the use of Memes for commercial purposes without owners consent.
The statement comes shortly after the viral meme from a video created by Kenyan Comedians Arap Marindich and Tula that has been circulating in various social media platforms.
Edward Sigei, KECOBO boss said the memes have since been used by a host of Kenyan corporate across various social media platforms, thereby raising significant copyright concerns.
In a statement released today, Edward Sigei advised corporates to conduct due diligence on the status of the photographs and videos before joining in the fun. He added that although the use of Memes on social media is tolerated, their publication for commercial purposes can attract a civil liability.
