China Square, a one stop shop located in Unicity mall will remain closed indefinitely.

The shop announced closure until further notice to allow time to sort out various issues.

"We, China Square Limited, regret to inform you that we will continue to close down for further notice."

The announcement follows a meeting held on Sunday to restructure its operations. The company management had announced it would resume operations normally on Monday.

The store owned by Chinese businessman Lei Cheng cited the issue of public safety due to the high volume of customers.

"As a supermarket, we are unable to handle the high volume of traffic, which has become a severe concern for the public safety of all our customers, we are arranging more security guards onsite."

The supermarket also cited inability to provide sufficient payment processing facilities, a situation it noted had resulted in long queues.

The third hindrance was attributed to misleading statements and over-expectations by customers across social media.

"Some of the statements on the internet have been misleading people, and some customers have overrated our services which have created unrealistic expectations. We need to close down and give a cooling down period."

Earlier on Lei had dismissed calls for him to close shop as malicious. He urged the public against misinterpreting the closure to mean anything else other than the stated reasons.

"My business is legal and is centered on health competition,” he said. “We followed all government requirements for setting up a business and am here to break monopolies."

He further apologised to their customers for any inconvenience that the closure may occasion, adding that they are committed to resolving the issues soonest possible.
