Education CS Ezekiel Machogu has directed Meru University to Reinstate VC Romanus Odhiambo who was last week sent on terminal leave amid claims of underperformance.

"The university council in its meeting held on February 27, 2023, evaluated your performance and found it to be below expectations. Therefore, the council declined to renew your contract as requested in your letter dated 20th December 2022," Read a statement from the university council.

In a statement on Monday, Machogu termed the move to suspend Odhiambo as ill-termed.

"The purported decision by the University Council to send Prof. Romanus Odhiambo on terminal leave and to appoint an acting Vice-Chancellor is ill-timed and unlawful. The university council is directed to facilitate the resumption of Odhiambo as VC with immediate effect, in any case before the closure of business on March 7."

On Monday the students went in a demo and engaged police in running battles. They  claimed the university council’s decision was political and demanded that the VC be immediately reinstated.

Following the students Unrest, the Senate closed the university indefinitely.

Today, the students took to the streets to celebrate the reinstatement of their Vice Chancellor Romanus Odhiambo.

The VC in his car waved at the students as a sign of showing appreciation for the support. The thousands of students escorted Professor. Odhiambo to his office in a procession that brought Meru Town to a standstill.
