There were an estimated 750 passengers on the boat, including at least 40 children, according to a spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration. The migrants were required to pay the smugglers between Ksh 700k to 1 million to secure a spot on the boat.

The migrants include: Pakistanis, Egyptians, Syrians, Afghans and Palestinians.

While hundreds are still missing and feared dead, it has garnered far less attention and resources than the Titan rescue efforts for five people.

Many human rights advocates are frustrated that the world seems to have already moved on and that the resources and media attention being dedicated to the Titan rescue efforts far outweigh those for the sunken migrant ship.

"The willingness to allow certain people to die while every effort is made to save others ... it’s a, you know, really dark reflection on humanity."

If a death toll in the hundreds was confirmed, it would be among the worst shipwrecks recorded in the Mediterranean.
