Kevin Kangethe, a Kenyan man accused of killing his girlfriend and leaving her body in a car at a Boston airport has escaped from police custody.
According to the police, Kevin Adam Kinyanjui Kange'the slipped out of police sight at the Muthaiga police station on Wednesday, February 7 evening and jumped onto a matatu and fled to an unknown destination.
The escape, which unfolded during a scheduled meeting with his lawyer, has sent shockwaves through the Nairobi law enforcement community.
The Nairobi Regional Police Commander Adamson Bungei said he rushed to the station when he learned of the escape. "We have arrested the officers who were on duty when he escaped to explain how it happened. It is just embarrassing to us," he said.
He had been detained at the police cells pending a ruling on whether he should be extradited to the US to face murder charges there in connection with the death of American citizen Margaret Mbitu on October 31, 2023.
Massachusetts officials said they were working with Kenyan authorities to locate him, and he was arrested in a nightclub on Jan. 30 after being on the run for three months.
