"Stella" has finally responded to Freshley Mwamburi in an attempt to explain what really happened 30 years ago.
An upcoming artist known as Kayte Melo has released a cover for 'Stella Wangu' song where she sings as "Stella" explaining to Freshley Mwamburi what happened at the airport where he claimed he saw her with another man and a mixed race baby.
In the song, she acknowledges that Freshley Mwamburi took her to Japan to further her studies. He sold his land and cattle to raise money for her travel. She also thanks the singer for taking care of her when she was in the foreign country.
"Stella" adds that she was waiting for the day she would finally meet the love of her life and on that fateful day in May, she met a friend named Chung in the airplane and he was in the company of his wife and child. Her excitement made her share how much she was waiting to meet Mwamburi, the man who changed her life.
"As soon as the plane landed, I witnessed drama. I alighted while carrying Chung’s child, he was beside me and his wife was behind him. When I saw my love Freshley, he appeared very disheartened. He bowed his head and then left the airport. I handed the child back to Chung and rushed after my love but he got into his car and sped off as I watched."
Her efforts to reach him through letters bore no fruits and months later she heard that he had married another woman and after a while the song 'Stella Wangu' hit the airwaves.
Stella was heartbroken as Freshley hadn’t even tried finding out what had happened and that was what he thought of her. She finally accepted losing her love, Freshly, but asked him why he couldn’t believe her and why he got upset with her to the point that they lost their love.
In 1992 Freshley Mwamburi released a song composed of real life story of heartbreak. In the song he narrated how his first love disappointed him, despite funding her college expenses all the way to her scholarship in Japan.
'Stella Wangu' has over the years grown to become more than just a song. Every 17th of May Kenyans come together to 'welcome' Stella from abroad.
