Tanzania prime minister Kassim Majaliwa has confirmed that the death toll from precision air flight tragedy has rose to 19.

"All Tanzanians are with you in mourning the 19 people who lost lives during this accident," he said.

The airplane carrying 43people including 39 passenger plunged into Lake Victoria on Sunday due to bad weather.

Rescuers pulled 26 survivors to safety from the Precision Air plane flight PW 494 which was headed to Bukoba from Dar es salaam. According to the BBC, the craft's two pilots survived the crash and managed to speak to local officials from the cockpit but the prime minister says they may have since died.

President Samia Suluhu Hassan expressed her condolences to those affected by the accident.

"Let's continue to be calm while the rescue operation continues as we pray to God to help us," she said on Twitter
