Chuka University fraternity is in mourning following the untimely death of a student at the institution.

The 23 year old who reportedly had a gambling problem took his own life at his girlfriend's rental house at Kangaru village in Embu County.

The body of the student was reportedly found on Wednesday by the girl who was out attending a lecture at the time he took his own life.

According to Thambo sub-location Assistant Chief Rose Wambeti, the girlfriend reported the matter to Kangaru police post.

Her boyfriend had visited her at her rental apartment and she left him in the house to attend a lecture. Upon returning, she found his body hanging from the roof of the bathroom with a belt.

The individual allegedly had a gambling addiction and losing a bet might have prompted him to commit suicide.

Police moved the body of the 23-year-old student to Embu Level Five Hospital Mortuary as investigations into the incident continue.

Cases of suicides  in universities have been recorded in the past years causing a worrying trend.

Some of the main causes include depression, mental illness, relationships gone sour and family rows.
