Naftali Kinuthia has been handed a 40 Years jail term after he was found guilty of murdering his estranged lover, Ivy Wangeci four years ago.
Before her demise, Wangeci was pursuing medicine at Moi University.
Kinuthia was convicted for murder after the court established that he had indeed hacked to death his victim outside the Moi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
Justice Stephen Githinji found Kinuthia guilty of committing the crime on April 9, 2019.
He noted that the offence committed on an innocent soul was harsh and deserved severe punishment.
Earlier in the year, Kinuthia had confessed to the murder, attributing the motive to anger issues.
He explained that Wangeci had provoked him by leaving their relationship for another person.
According to Kinuthia, he had invested in the relationship, both emotionally and financially, but his love was not reciprocated.
In his verdict, Justice Githinji noted there was no evidence to support the existence of an intimate relationship between the suspect and the victim.
He noted that the accused used a lethal weapon-axe and hit the deceased several leaving her with no chance of survival.
"If he did not want to kill her he would have used bare fists on her and not the axe," Githinji said.
The judge noted that claims of provocation by Kinuthia were not true.
Kinuthia, through his lawyer, expressed regret for the crime and claimed to have changed in the four years he had been in remand.
