Kenya Railways company has increased fares across all routes in the country by 50 per cent. It announced an increase in fares for five services including Madaraka Express Passenger Service, Madaraka Express Commuter Service, Nairobi Commuter Rail Service, Kisumu Safari Train and Nanyuki Safari Train.

A passenger travelling from Nairobi to the coastal town on an economy class will pay up to Sh1,500 from Sh1,000 before.

First-class users will be hit the hardest since they will be parting with Sh4,500 one way from Sh3,000 currently.

Passengers who ply the Nairobi to Suswa route will pay Ksh250, up from Ksh200.

In a statement, the company linked the hike in charges to the current high fuel prices, which have pushed up operational costs.

According to Kenya Railways, parents will pay half fare for children between 3 to 11 years. Children over 11 years old will pay the full fare while those aged 3 years and below will not incur any fare charges.

The new fares will take effect on January 1, 2024.

Tickets purchased before then will, however, not be affected.
