The pharmacy and Poisons Board has issued an advisory against use of vaginal pearls claimed to have cleansing attributes.

The board issued a statement against a brand identified as yoni pearls, saying the products and other similar brands are unregistered in Kenya.

The board further warned that the pearls also referred as herbal tampons or cleansing pearls pose public health risks.

"The PPB notifies the public that Yoni pearls is neither registered nor authorised for use in Kenya as required under the pharmacy and poisons Act Cap 244. In light of this, PPB strongly advices against the distribution, supply, sale or use of the aforementioned product and any other unregistered products with similar claims."

Promoters of the products claim vaginal pearls can resolve common reproductive health issues such as recurrent yeast and bacterial vaginosis infections, infertility and Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).

Some creators of the product says the herbs in these pearls create a “pulling effect that draws toxins, bad bacteria, dead cells, old blood clots, mucus and more from your yoni, while at the same time tightening your yoni and deterring vaginal dryness and other ailments.

Three pieces of the product is currently being sold at Ksh 650 to 1,000 on online stores.

A woman is advised to insert the tampon in their vagina, and pull out after two days.

PPB has further called on the public and healthcare providers to report any suspicious health products and technologies to the board through the website or the USSD code *271#.
